How to Clean and Care for Your Toys

Clean and care for your toys — SixMuse guide

Cleaning your toys isn't glamorous, but it's the single most important thing you can do to protect your health and extend your toys' life. Here's the routine — no scrubbing, no special products required.

Before and after — every time

Yes, even before. Toys sitting in a drawer pick up dust and trace residue. Thirty seconds of cleaning before play takes seconds and prevents irritation.

The 60-second routine

  1. Rinse with warm water — not hot. Hot water can degrade silicone over time.
  2. Use mild, unscented soap — anti-bacterial hand soap is perfect. Fragrance and dye can irritate sensitive tissue.
  3. Lather, then rinse thoroughly — any soap residue can cause discomfort next time.
  4. Air-dry on a clean towel — or pat dry with a lint-free cloth. Never share towels between toys.
  5. Store somewhere breathable — a cotton pouch is ideal. Plastic bags trap moisture, which traps fungus.

Material-specific notes

  • Silicone toys — top-rack dishwasher safe (no detergent), or boil for 3 minutes if the toy is non-motorized. Never use silicone-based lube on silicone toys — it can degrade the surface.
  • Glass & stainless steel — fully waterproof. Boil, dishwasher, even sterilize. Truly bulletproof.
  • Motorized toys (with batteries / charging port) — never submerge unless explicitly labeled "waterproof." Wipe motors and ports with a damp cloth.

Lube matters too

Match lube to material: water-based works with everything. Silicone-based works with glass and metal but degrades silicone toys. Oil-based degrades latex and many materials — best avoided unless you're using only steel or glass.

When to replace

Look for surface changes — cracking, stickiness, discoloration, or strong smells that don't wash out. Any of those = retire it. A quality silicone toy, cared for properly, lasts 10+ years. The cheap stuff might only give you 6 months.
